Legal Intern
Department: Legal, Corporate
Location: Itasca, IL
Type: 12 Week Internship (May to August)
Summary:
The Legal Intern will gain practical, in-house legal experience supporting the Legal Department in contract management, corporate governance, and litigation readiness. This role is designed to provide substantive exposure to contract interpretation, legal workflows, and document retention obligations within a corporate legal environment. The intern will work closely with attorneys and business stakeholders, receiving training on how contracts are reviewed, tracked, enforced, and produced in response to legal and regulatory matters.
Duties would include, but not be limited to, the following:
Contract Review and Lifecycle Management
- Review executed contracts to assess and validate key terms and conditions as captured in the company’s contract Lifecyle management system (“CLM”).
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of the CLM, ensuring contract records are complete, accurate, and legally sound prior to finalization.
- Support follow-up with internal stakeholders regarding contract execution status, approvals, and related documentation, gaining exposure to cross‑functional legal collaboration.
- Develop familiarity with common commercial contract structures, clauses, and risk allocation concepts through supervised review and discussion.
Document Retention & Information Governance
- Participate in a document retention baseline project, including attending site meetings, observing legal compliance practices, and cataloging records by category.
- Assist with documenting retention practices and learning how retention schedules and destruction obligations are developed and implemented.
- Gain exposure to legal risk management related to data retention, document security, and compliance obligations.
Litigation and Discovery
- Assist attorneys with document identification, retrieval, and review in connection with litigation, subpoenas, and regulatory inquiries.
- Support document production efforts, learning how relevance, privilege, and confidentiality considerations are evaluated in a litigation context.
- Gain insight into how in-house legal teams prepare for disputes and manage external counsel requests.
Additional Legal Projects
- Support other legal department initiatives as assigned, offering broad exposure to the daily operations of a corporate legal team.
Expected outcome of internship:
- Develop a general understanding of common contract terms and conditions and how they function in a commercial setting
- Gain hands-on experience using a contract lifecycle management tool
- Understand the role of document retention policies, retention schedules, and document governance in mitigating legal risk
- Learn the fundamentals of document collection, review, and production obligations in response to a subpoena or litigation discovery
- Experience how an in-house legal department partners with business teams in a regulated, global organization

- Expected graduation with a Juris Doctor in December 2027 or May 2028 from a law program.
