The Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) mission is to fight fraud, waste and abuse in Texas health and human services programs. The OIG government relations and communications teams support this mission by sharing the agency’s successes with stakeholders and the citizens of Texas. The government relations/communications team facilitates relationships with the Texas Legislature, news media, produces OIG reports and publications, maintains the OIG website and multiple social media channels, develops talking points and presentations, and prepares internal and external stakeholder communications.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic intern to join the government relations/ communications team for the 2026 summer. The internship offers the opportunity to gain real-world experience in many aspects of the government relations/communications field while actively making a difference for Texans in need. The ideal candidate is creative, highly organized, has excellent writing skills and a passion for public service.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop content for the OIG website and social media channels.
- Assist in monitoring and managing OIG social media channels.
- Review OIG website content, recommend updates and develop strategy for rolling reviews.
- Assist with constituent communications.
- Assist with OIG communications strategic planning.
- Assist OIG Government Relations team to monitor legislative committee hearings.
- Assist OIG Government Relations team respond to legislative inquiries and information requests.
- Assist OIG Government Relations team develop presentations and develop legislative initiatives.
- Collaborate with team members on special projects and initiatives as needed.

- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Initial Screening Criteria
- Currently enrolled at or recently graduated from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in government, political science, English, communications, public relations, journalism or related field.
