The City of Bloomington Legal Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Intern to support its attorneys and staff in providing legal services to the city government. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in law, government, or public service to gain hands-on experience in a municipal legal environment. Interns may assist with legal research, document preparation, administrative tasks, and attend meetings or court proceedings, depending on experience level and department needs.This list may not include all tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all specific duties which may be required. Other duties may be assigned.
- Conduct legal and policy research under the supervision of attorneys.
- Draft, edit, and proofread legal memoranda, correspondence, and other documents.
- Assist in organizing case files, legal records, procurement documents, and/or contracts and other related materials.
- Attend court hearings, city council meetings, or administrative proceedings, as permitted.
- Assist with responding to public records requests and other administrative duties.
- Participate in department projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Duties may also include work in the City’s procurement and/or contract approval processes.
- Currently enrolled in college, or law school (1L or 2L).
- Strong interest in law, government, political science, public administration, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong research and analytical abilities.
- High level of professionalism and discretion.
- Detail-oriented and well-organized.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Able to work independently and as part of a team..
- Prior coursework or experience related to legal studies, government, or public policy, preferred.
- Familiarity with legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) for law students, preferred.
- Open to applicants with no related experience but a strong desire to work in a legal office environment.
