Who we are:
The Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is the administrative arm of the Circuit Court. Our day-to-day operations significantly impact the Chesterfield community. The Clerk’s Office prioritizes accessibility, transparency, effectiveness and being constituent focused. The staff within the Clerk’s Office are responsible for providing administrative support, record keeping, case management, court-related financial matters, and, most importantly, adhering to the law.
What you will learn:
The Circuit Court Clerk Intern will be trained to prepare detailed court documents; utilize automated case management systems; prepare correspondence; interact professionally with the general public regarding concealed carry permits, marriage licenses, court fines; data entry; policy review and development; track legislation during General Assembly session.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Conduct phone calls with attorneys/parties
- Deliver/pick up case files to/from various offices throughout the courthouse
- Audit foreclosure, family cases, and criminal cases
- Pull/deliver case files
- Generate notices as directed
- Attend court proceedings (time permitting)
- Data entry
- Customer Service support, including, but not limited to dealing with inquires on the phone, via email, mail and face to face
- Follow the policies of the Circuit Court and the Clerk’s office
- Meet with your assigned supervisor at least once per week
- Work with other interns on shared projects as assigned
- Conduct factual research and maintain an accurate list of sources (with links)
- Draft process lists and reports as assigned with the support of your supervisor
- Attend meetings as assigned
- Other duties as agreed upon in your specific work plan or assigned by your school
- Perform other work as required.
The Chesterfield Experience:
As an intern in Chesterfield County, you will have an opportunity to meet with county leaders, collaborate with your peers, attend training seminars, and participate in team building exercises to complement what you will be learning in the professional work environment provided by the Circuit Court Clerk department.
Internship Requirements and Eligibility
- To be considered for the Internship Program, students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8. Students accepted into the Internship Program must be able to participate in the full 10-week program, exhibit a commitment to public service, and a genuine interest in learning about public administration.
- Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
- Some of the skills you may need in this position include, but are not limited to:
- Professional communication, oral and written
- Professional writing
- Research and analysis (raw data, peer-reviewed work, discerning quality sources)
- Self-directed and self-starter
- Efficient but produce high quality work
- You may not start with all these skills, and that is ok. We value your learning and growth into these skill sets.
- This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy” and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.

Program Dates
The Summer 2026 program will be held from May 26, 2026 to July 30, 2026.

Program Pay Rates
Undergraduate-$17.00/hour; Graduate-$19.00/hour
