Legislative Affairs Intern (Part-Time)
The Florida Institute of CPAs (FICPA) is seeking two highly motivated Legislative Affairs Interns to support our advocacy team during the 2026 Florida Legislative Session. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in governmental affairs, legislative tracking, communications, and event coordination, with a focus on protecting and advancing the CPA profession.
Internship Structure
We will bring on two part-time interns to ensure consistent coverage during the extended workday hours of the legislative session. This structure allows for continuous monitoring and timely support of our advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities
Legislative Tracking
- Monitor legislative sessions, bills, and committee meetings relevant to the CPA profession.
- Track updates and changes to legislation, preparing timely reports for the Director of Legislative & Political Affairs
Communications & Writing
- Draft and edit legislative summaries, meeting notes, and related documents.
- Assist in preparing materials for member communications, including weekly legislative reports, alerts, Capitol Briefs, and Capitol Connections.
- Prepare and organize bill-tracking folders for proposed legislation of interest.
Administrative Support
- Provide general administrative assistance such as scheduling meetings, organizing documents, and maintaining databases.
- Support advocacy team operations during the legislative session.
- Assist in the planning, preparation, and execution of CPA Day at the Capitol, including both pre-event logistics and on-site support.
Schedule & Duration
- Commitment: 15-20 hours per week.
- Schedule: Staggered coverage with one intern assigned to morning shifts and the other to afternoons.
- Program Dates: Internship begins during interim committee weeks and runs through the 2026 Legislative Session, concluding one month after Sine Die.
Qualifications
Required Experience:
- Education: Current graduate students in political science, public administration, or related fields preferred. Special consideration for law students and those enrolled in Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Applied American Politics and Policy (MAAPP) programs.
- Skills: Strong research, writing, and communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with legislative tracking tools preferred.
- Experience: Preference for applicants with prior experience in political campaigns, advocacy organizations, lobbying firms, or legislative internships/OPS roles in the Florida Legislature.
- Attributes: Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage multiple assignments with minimal supervision.
