The Public Policy Team works to protect our state business climate and regional reputation by supporting key policies at the state and local levels that impact metro Atlanta’s economy, talent, and community.
The Public Policy Legal Intern will help support MAC staff members working each day at the Georgia State Capitol and at the MAC offices to shape legislation and policy impacting the region and state. The intern will work directly under the Director of Legal Affairs. Preferred skills for this internship include a desire to learn new skills, a willingness to perform public policy research, and the ability to communicate professionally to ensure MAC’s success during the legislative session. The intern will gain practical experience in the intersection of law and public policy.
Our ideal candidate is a driven, analytical, and highly professional law student or recent law school graduate eager to gain real-world experience in government affairs. Successful candidates will be organized, possess strong networking and communication skills, and demonstrate personal capability in managing multiple projects without constant supervision. Interns must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on current and proposed legislation, statutory interpretation, and relevant case law.
- Prepare written summaries, policy briefs, and research memos on bills of interest.
- Assist in the drafting of legislative testimony, legal memoranda, and other policy-related documents.
- Attend legislative committee hearings, observe floor debates, and participate in meetings with policy advocates and elected officials.
- Assist with the tracking and analysis of legislation as it moves through the legislative process.
- Support the Public Policy Team through policy research and administrative tasks.
- Build relationships with lobbyists, legislative staff, and public officials.
- Assist with additional Public Policy or MAC projects as needed.
Qualifications:
- A current law student or recent law school graduate.
- Exceptional legal research, analytical, and writing skills—ability to translate complex legal findings into clear, concise policy recommendations.
- Background in public policy, political science, government affairs, public affairs, communications or related fields is desirable, but not required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organized with ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism required for networking and representing MAC at the State Capitol.
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift items weighing 30 pounds
