To: Passionate and Dedicated Law Students Interested in Animal Law
Friends of Animals is pleased to announce legal internship opportunities in its Wildlife Law Program (WLP), located in Greenwood Village, Colorado. The WLP seeks one spring intern for 2026.
Established in 2013, the WLP fills a niche between animal and environmental advocacy. Animal advocates often fail to fully utilize the array of local, state, federal, and international environmental laws as a means to protect the rights of animals to live free from human interference. Environmental advocates often utilize these laws but do so to achieve broad environmental objectives that may not always protect the rights of free-living animals. The WLP focuses on the defense of wildlife and their habitats throughout the world.
The right of all animals to live a meaningful life free from human exploitation guides our work. Attorneys in the WLP utilize a variety of environmental laws to promote the rights of wildlife, including the Endangered Species Act, the Migratory Treaty Bird Act, the Wild Free-Roaming Horses & Burros Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and international treaties like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with WLP attorneys who litigate matters in federal and state court, as well as engage in non-litigation advocacy projects. The internship is designed to provide valuable experience and mentorship to students interested in animal and environmental public interest law. Typically, intern projects include drafting documents (60-day notice letters, administrative comments, and petitions); researching, analyzing, and summarizing novel and complex legal issues; helping edit filings and submissions with WLP attorneys; and assisting WLP attorneys with all stages of their cases. The WLP attorneys also expose students to a wide variety of opportunities to listen to or attend oral arguments, hearings, conferences, and meetings with opposing counsel.
