Role Overview

We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Legal Intern to join our Legal and Compliance team. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-growing fintech environment, working closely with our in-house legal counsel on a range of high-impact initiatives. This opportunity would suit a law student looking to gain some experience in the fintech industry.

Responsibilities

Assist with the coordination and submission of regulatory materials across multiple jurisdictions.
Conduct in-depth research into laws, regulations, and case law relevant to Deferit’s operations, including consumer finance, privacy, payments, and fintech regulation.
Support legal review and proofreading of commercial contracts, NDAs, service agreements, and internal policies.
Help maintain legal registers, internal compliance calendars, and documentation logs to support ongoing regulatory obligations.
Contribute to drafting or updating internal legal and compliance policies and procedures, such as AML, privacy, and cybersecurity frameworks.
Liaise with teams including Risk, Finance, Customer Support, and Product to identify legal risks and ensure regulatory alignment across operations.
Take on miscellaneous legal as needed in a fast-paced startup environment, with flexibility and initiative.

What You'll Bring

Currently enrolled in or recently completed a law degree at a top tier law school (JD, LLB, or equivalent).
Demonstrated interest in fintech, consumer finance, or regulatory law.
Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
Exceptional attention to detail and organization.
Proactive mindset, eager to learn and take ownership of tasks.
Prior experience in a legal internship, paralegal role, or compliance team is a plus.
NYC-based, available full-time over summer with optional one per week during term.

Pay range and compensation package

Salary range for this position: $25 per hour.
