The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Preparation, the Pro Bono and Summer Preparation Coordinator (“Coordinator”) will support the Law School’s Pro Bono Program including the pro bono graduation requirement and spring break caravans. The Coordinator will also work with the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Preparation to prepare students for their summer internships in the public sector as part of Columbia Law School’s comprehensive public service professional development program. The Coordinator will also be responsible for assisting with the implementation of Columbia Law School’s summer programs, including the Human Rights Internship Program (HRIP), in collaboration with the PI/PS Office’s Associate Director for Human Rights and Public International Law and the Assistant Director for Pro Bono and Summer Preparation. The Coordinator reports to the PI/PS Office Assistant Director of Operations.

Responsibilities

Pro Bono:

Help track individual JD student compliance with Columbia’s mandatory pro bono graduation requirements in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Pro Bono and Summer Preparation. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to reviewing student petitions and exit questionnaires, approving supervisor reports, updating online content and resources, managing Columbia Law’s internal pro bono databases, communicating with students, and coordinating with relevant host organization supervisors, Columbia administrators, and others.
Assist Columbia’s student groups with organizing student-directed pro bono projects. Work with Assistant Director for Pro Bono and Summer Preparation to provide training programs to student organizers or leaders of Spring Break caravans and in-house projects, review applications and other documentation, and approve caravans and in-house pro bono projects that meet the CLS and NYS Pro Bono Requirement.
In collaboration with the Business Office, perform administrative functions such as ensuring the stipend payment process runs smoothly and handling the caravan reimbursement process. Perform other administrative functions.
Monitor pro bono email inbox and answer student questions/emails regarding pro bono requirements.
Assist with updating publications and organizing pro bono programming (planning, logistics and content).
Analyze pro bono data annually, and provide data for Honors Reception, Year in Review and other PI/PS Office functions.

HRIP:

Coordinate the HRIP training and orientation (T&O) programs in collaboration with PI/PS Office’s Associate Director for Human Rights and Public International Law.
Update the HRIP T&O manual, and related training materials including online resources, in conjunction with the Associate Director for Human Rights and Public International Law.
Build connections between current and former HRIP participants as preparation for upcoming trips, and promote information sharing amongst participants.
Assist with HRIP Information Sessions, T&O, and Debriefing Sessions, including preparation of presentations, notetaking and logistical arrangements.
Handle logistics of the HRIP stipend process and travel arrangements, in collaboration with other Columbia offices, including disbursement of stipends and vaccination reimbursements and flight bookings. Perform other administrative functions. Maintain close collaboration with university travel office and CLS business office.
Track HRIP placement data and assist with outreach to potential host organizations. Assist with assessments of goals for new partnerships (based on student interest in substantive issues and regions).

Summer Preparation Programs:

Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Preparation and the PI/PS Dean, coordinate the implementation of 1L training workshops in the fall semester on resumes, cover letters and other job search preparation. Coordinate key other summer internship training programs, such as “The Scoop”. Help to produce materials such as the “Who Worked Where” list to distribute at events.
Assist the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Preparation with organizing and running the Mock Interview Program for students, including managing the student sign-up process, assisting with practitioner (interviewer) outreach and finalizing interview schedule. Monitor online interviews while in process.
In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Preparation, assist with the creation, revision and distribution of publications, internal reports and other materials pertaining to summer programs.
Generate reports about summer internship evaluations and present findings to PI/PS advisors.

Other:Performs additional responsibilities as assigned and requested.

Minimum Qualifications

High School degree or its equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum 2 years’ related experience, preferably as a program coordinator, administrative assistant, or office manager with responsibility for public interest, not-for-profit or educationally related programs. Outstanding data management, administrative, organizational, secretarial and interpersonal skills required. Excellent computer skills and experience including word processing, Internet, desktop publishing, Excel and computer database management required. Must be willing to learn and implement new technologies to enhance task performance. Excellent English oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated interest and participation in public interest issues and activities are desirable. Ability to initiate and follow-through with minimal supervision as well as meet deadlines, work under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, be part of a collegial team and balance competing assignments necessary. Must have good judgment and be able to maintain confidentiality. Availability for some evening and weekend work required.
